FILM REVIEW

FATHER, SOLDIER, SON

Father, Soldier, Son is a documentary film that tells the story of Brian Eisch, an American Army sergeant who has two sons and is deployed to Afghanistan. The film focuses on the effects this deployment has on both the sons and the family itself. Directed and produced by Catrin Einhorn and Leslye Davis.

The film opens with a speech by Barack Obama announcing that he is sending more troops to Afghanistan which helps the viewer to get some context but one of the strong points of the film is in the statements of the sons Isaac and Joey who understand why their father has to go fight in Afghanistan but they are also afraid of what might happen, the reality of having a father in the army and that as a child you are aware of things other children may not be.

It is a film that makes you reflect and is good in the sense of being able to understand what is like to have a military parent or any military family member deployed or not, but on the other hand, we also think that no young children should go through what these boys go through and that it conveys the message that war is still active, and violence doesn’t bring us anything. Another negative factor of the documentary film would be the fact that the family forgets that they have cameras filming them, which sometimes leads to the appearance of not quite correct behavior.

The film ends with the moment when Brian oldest son, Isaac, begins his career in the military as a tribute to his father, who was severely wounded during a deployment. If someone wants to watch it, he will understand how to live the atmosphere of the military but it is not a film that provides the correct message.
